Birders and Hunters—Conserving Wetlands and Waterfowl

Written by Bob Sundstrom

That is BirdNote.
[Hen Mallard hail call]
When a birder meets a duck hunter on a path by a marsh, it might sound they’ve little in frequent. That is an unlucky misperception, as a result of the 2 usually share important values: a fascination with waterfowl and a dedication to conserving wetlands.
[Canada Goose flock calls]
Due to the political will and monetary contributions of waterfowl hunters and organizations like Geese Limitless, pure wetlands that may in any other case have been misplaced have been preserved. Waterfowl hunters dedicate hundreds of thousands of {dollars} yearly to the conservation of wetlands. A few of the wildlife refuges we treasure have been bought with funds from the sale of duck stamps to hunters and different conservationists.
[Marsh sounds with mix of Mallard and Pintail gabbling and quacking]
The general impression of looking on waterfowl numbers is modest, and it’s regulated by scientific administration. Geese and geese persist in nice numbers after the looking season ends. The important thing to their continued abundance is the conservation of habitat. However waterfowl habitat is diminishing throughout North America. That is the place we want the shared efforts of these pure, if at occasions unacknowledged, allies: birders and hunters.
[Mallards enjoying a wetland]
