Singing with Fox Sparrows

Written by Bob Sundstrom

That is BirdNote.

A modest thicket of bushes alongside a avenue might be the right place to listen to one of many earliest fowl songs of spring: the Fox Sparrow.

A loud, spirited tune of whistled notes tells us the Fox Sparrow is at hand.

The stocky sparrow reveals itself by vigorously kicking the leaf litter with each ft. It’s rust-brown and grey above and on the face, with a white breast speckled with rusty streaks.

Fox Sparrows breed in boreal forests and within the mountains of the West. There are 4 geographic teams, every with a novel plumage. The easternmost birds have the rufous coloration of a Purple Fox. Others discovered additional west are a mixture of brown, rust and grey.

Fox Sparrows’ diversified habitats embrace boreal spruce and shrubby willows, rocky alpine thickets and brushy forest clearings, and moist stream sides and chaparral. What these locations have in widespread is dense vegetation the place the sneaky Fox Sparrow is at house.

As winter ends, search for these placing sparrows tossing up leaves beside a path or street. In case you have a birdfeeder, scattering seed on the bottom may draw a Fox Sparrow out of hiding.
