The Birds Gown for Spring

Tailored from a script by Frances Wooden

That is BirdNote!

[Song and call notes of American Goldfinch]

It’s spring! And for a lot of birds, a time to look their greatest to draw a brand new mate. This American Goldfinch has lately molted. Its outdated, worn-down feathers have fallen out, and new ones have grown in. The male is now a vivid yellow, with a hanging black again and wings.

[Song of American Goldfinch]

When goldfinches molt within the fall, they lose these brightly coloured feathers. That means, they might dangle round all winter, unnoticed. Their winter camouflage helps them mix in with the drab background of the season. In spring, they molt once more, making a dramatic become their gorgeous breeding plumage. [Song of American Goldfinch]

And the goldfinch isn’t the one hen to make this stunning transition. [Willow Ptarmigan chuckle] The Willow Ptarmigan, a hen of the northern latitudes, is rusty-brown in summer season, mixing in with the tundra the place it nests. Within the fall, its plumage adjustments to winter-white, matching the panorama. [Laughing Gull call] Some gulls, like these Laughing Gulls and likewise the Bonaparte’s Gull, add dapper black or brown hoods for the breeding season.

Summer time, fall, winter or spring, we’re glad you take heed to BirdNote. I’m Mary McCann.
