BirdNoir: The One That Acquired Away

Written by Conor Gearin and Mark Bramhill

That is BirdNoir. I’m Michael Stein, Personal Eye.

[music: Teddy Wilson, “As Time Goes By”]

Of all my sorry tales, the sorriest one is my nemesis chook. That’s what us birders name a species that simply retains supplying you with the slip. Properly, my nemesis chook is the Painted Bunting. An actual gem of a chook — the males have blue heads, inexperienced wings and crimson breasts, and the females are yellow-green.

These birds love open areas: shrubby clearings and overgrown farm fields. I don’t get out of the town a lot, what with my PI work. However at any time when I hear a couple of Painted Bunting round, I seize my binoculars and my fedora and rush out the door.

[door squeaks open and slams shut]

And I miss it each time.

Final yr, I acquired phrase of a pair of them within the metropolis cemetery. Because the rain started to pour, I jumped in my automobile and sped throughout city. [car tire screech]

I ran to the pond close to the place the birds had been seen. I requested a close-by birder the place they had been. She pointed to a tree and stated, “Proper there. However wait — I can’t see them anymore!” After which I heard their tune, like a dream fading away:

[fade music “Le Belle Aurore” from Casablanca]
[Painted Bunting song, ML 110139, reverb fx]
[bring up music same as above ]

So I’ve heard, however by no means seen, my nemesis chook. However as I go to sleep I see these Painted Buntings in all their incredible colour. Sometime, I inform myself. Sometime, Michael, you’ll see it sometime….

    [Painted Bunting song, ML 110139]
