The Phoebe and the Pewee

The Phoebe and the Pewee

That is BirdNote.
[Eastern Phoebe song,, 0.15-.22]
This brisk whistle belongs to a chook named for its track — the Jap Phoebe. It repeats its title every time it sings, so it’s a reasonably easy voice to determine and bear in mind.
[Eastern Phoebe song,, 0.15-.22]
The Jap Phoebe is without doubt one of the most acquainted flycatchers east of the Rockies. They typically nest very near individuals, beneath the eaves, in barns, or beneath bridges. They’re one of many very earliest migrants to return north in spring. And so they sing…so much.
However there’s one other flycatcher that whistles its title time and again:
[Eastern Wood-Pewee,, 0.24-.27]
It’s the Jap Wooden-Pewee — or simply “pewee” for brief — frequent in leafy forests east of the Rockies. This one’s extra typically heard than seen, and it wouldn’t be uncommon to listen to a pewee and a phoebe on the similar spot.
With cautious listening, although, you may inform them aside by their totally different singing kinds. The phoebe’s just a little extra…energetic:
[Eastern Phoebe song,, 0.15-.22]
…the pewee’s a bit extra…plaintive:
[Eastern Wood-Pewee,, 0.24-.27]
