There are two sorts of pelicans in North America – the American White Pelican and the Brown Pelican. And so they’ve advanced two completely different techniques to catch their prey.
[American White Pelican grunting call]
The American White Pelican floats on the floor of the water, able to scoop up fish. Because the chook lifts its head, water drains out of its pouch, and the fish go down with a gulp. The birds usually work collectively to herd fish — they kind a bunch, swim in a line, and dip their heads , scooping up their catch.
[Brown Pelicans call]
The Brown Pelican takes extra of an every-bird-for-itself method. It drops down on its prey from as a lot as 65 ft up. Because it plummets deep beneath the waves, its slim beak cuts via the water after which opens to engulf the fish in its expansive pouch. Then it pops to the floor and downs its catch.
American White Pelicans could be discovered all through a lot of the USA, particularly within the South and inside West. Brown Pelicans have a tendency to love the hotter coastal waters of Louisiana, Florida, and Southern California. At sure instances of yr, you could find them farther up the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, too.
